Tonight when whipping up some cinnamon scrolls for the five lads to munch I suggested Hamish photograph his dish as a document of success and he replied 'I'll take a photo of the final outcome' so I warn you all - there will be some disturbing images showing up on FaceBook! I have spent the past two weeks of the school holidays balancing children and work on a knifepoint, and I can't believe I have still been able to maintain some reasonable outcomes. We have had a friend stay nearly every night for at least one of the children, and it has been lovely to have so many kids running around and having fun with the Wii - Just Dance, cricket in the park, the beach etc. including unstructured play - which is hard to make happen.
I have been monitoring free range kids http://freerangekids.wordpress.com/ and am really interested in reassessing my 'helicopter' parenting. Lenore Skenazy the journalist who writes and puts together the Free Range Kids blog is renowned for letting her nine year old son travel alone on the New York subway - he survived, however Lenore's reputation did not - she was attacked from all corners of the US and the story even made it to Europe and Australia.
I suggest all parents check out her blog - fascinating stuff being posted there all the time.
